![]() So it's pretty cool to speak to people and they say, 'Where do you coach?' and I can say West Nottingham. I think there's close to 70 flags and that's something they remember. In our dining hall, we have some of the flags from all the kids from different countries who have gone here. A lot of the college coaches who come back, they remember some of the things that are still here. "It definitely brings back some hype of West Nottingham Academy basketball. ![]() ![]() "We represent the school in a very positive manner," said Johnson. Many of those coaches have favorable memories of previous trips to the scenic Colora campus. We had between 15-20 colleges in this fall at our open workouts." Play for a program that has a great history and get them looks from colleges. And then do something with their basketball career, too. We just kind of brought that mentality here to try to really bring in high quality student-athletes, guys who really want to buy in to what West Nottingham has to offer. To be honest, you're not going to be that good. "If you aren't going out and finding players, you aren't representing your program. "At Lawrence and some of those places up north, it's like the best prep school basketball in the country" he said. Johnson came to WNA with the goal of rekindling the program's halcyon days. I knew of Raphael Chillious but I didn't really know him until I was inquiring about this job. I'm a UConn fan so I'm coaching at a place where Josh Boone went to school. "An opportunity to really rebuild something that was really good in the early 2000s. "The history of the program was a major attraction," Johnson said. Chillious is currently associate head coach at Eastern Carolina University following stints at Washington and UConn. Former NBA player Josh Boone finished his high school career at WNA before playing at the University of Connecticut. Raphael Chillious, known as Ralph Carter when he played for the Rams before attending Lafayette College, coached the Rams against some of the nation's top teams before leaving for South Kent (Conn.). ![]() The last time West Nottingham embarked on this kind of challenge was 2001-03. WNA's history helped bring Johnson to Colora. "I recruited a kid out of Lawrence to come to Eastern and got lucky and got the job at Lawrence," Johnson said. He remained at Eastern as an assistant coach for four years before becoming head coach at Lawrence (Mass.) Academy. Johnson, also the school's Director of Student Life and Athletics, is a Massachusetts native who played collegiately at Eastern Connecticut State University. Benchmark testing is administered at the beginning and end of the school year to measure and demonstrate progress in academic English skills.Second-year coach Kris Johnson has led the transition out of the MIL into a significantly more formidable slate. Extra help and tutoring is readily available as students work intensively to develop and improve grammar and vocabulary along with refining language skills both receptive (reading and listening) and productive (speaking and writing). The ESL program features two levels of English preparation at the intermediate and advanced levels as well as content classes in History Humanities and Modern World History. Some students with advanced English-language skills may not need additional language support and will be placed directly into the college-preparatory curriculum. Students are initially enrolled in the ESL program, which is based on English language testing scores submitted during the admissions process, as well as at the recommendation of the program director after reviewing recommendations and grades submitted by the student. Our international student program develops and improves international students’ academic language skills so that they can be successful in our college-preparation curriculum and as they continue onto American colleges and universities.
